One subject I got very familiar with during the ATPI summer workshops were horses. This was a golden hour shot at the beginning of the 2007 photo road trip class. I later spent three days documenting life at the Texas A&M Commerce equine center during my visual communication class two years later.

Studying photography was something I started out of necessity when I became a journalism teacher. But it didn’t take long to become a passion for me. Pablo Picasso once said, “I have discovered photography. Now I can kill myself. I have nothing else to learn.” I wouldn’t go to that extreme, but I would count the Christmas day when I received my first SLR, a Canon Rebel G, as a very important moment for me.

I tell my students, if they truly love to learn, that photography is for them. I honestly believe you could learn something new about the craft every day of your life and you still wouldn’t master all of it by the end of your days.
